In 2018, The New York Philharmonic fired Matthew Muckey and Liang Wang after an outside investigation for unspecified misconduct. They were reinstated in 2020 with the support of their union. In 2024, Vulture magazine elaborated that a colleague accused Wang of providing her a drink containing date-rape drugs, after which she was allegedly raped by Muckey. The accuser was terminated shortly after bringing the allegations. The NYP has suspended Wang and Muckey with pay until 2026. Wang and Muckey have sued the NYP for wrongful dismissal.
